India’s technology ambitions are no longer just policy documents — they are rolling off factory floors.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility of Micron Technology in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the commencement of commercial production and the first shipment of made-in-India semiconductor memory modules — a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor manufacturing journey.
The Sanand plant is ISO 9001:2015 certified and, once fully ramped up, will house over 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space — making it one of the world’s largest single-floor semiconductor assembly and test cleanrooms. Micron expects to assemble and test tens of millions of chips at the facility in 2026, scaling to hundreds of millions of units in 2027.
At the inauguration, Micron presented its first shipment of memory modules manufactured in India to Dell Technologies, which will power laptops produced domestically — a direct step toward strengthening local electronics manufacturing.
More plants are coming fast. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that four semiconductor plants are expected to be ready in India by 2026, with two more in 2027. India’s first full fabrication unit is set to be ready in Dholera by 2028. Plants by Micron, CG Power, Kaynes, and Tata Electronics are spread across Gujarat and Assam, with India already holding a 20% share of global semiconductor design human resources, primarily in south Indian states like Tamil Nadu.
On the AI front, India is scaling fast too. India now has 34,000 GPUs accessible through the IndiaAI Mission at ₹115–150 per GPU-hour — roughly 42% below market rates. The government has committed to scaling this to 100,000 GPUs by end of 2026.
Sarvam AI, the first startup selected under the IndiaAI Mission to build India’s sovereign large language model, launched two open-source models in February 2026: Sarvam-30B and Sarvam-105B, the latter supporting 10+ Indian languages with a 128,000-token context window. The company has raised $53 million in its Series A from Lightspeed, Peak XV, and Khosla Ventures.
UPI, India’s flagship digital payments infrastructure, continues to operate at massive scale — with over 22 billion monthly transactions as of early May 2026, proving that India can build systems that are affordable, fast, and accessible to ordinary citizens.
The Union Budget 2026–27 has allocated ₹1,000 crore for the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0, focused on semiconductor equipment, materials, full-stack Indian IP design, and supply chain resilience. As of December 2025, 10 semiconductor projects valued at ₹1.60 lakh crore have been approved across six states.
As PM Modi noted at the Sanand inauguration, if oil regulated the last century, the microchip will regulate this one — and India is now in the game.
